The EU Animal Health Law was published in March 2016. It replaced a whole array of existing regulations in a bid to harmonize and strenghten the enforcement of the legislation in the fight against animal diseases. The EU Animal Health Law succeeded the EU Animal Health Strategy (2007-2013). The implementation date was April 21, 2021.
Among the most important animal diseases in the EU are African Swine Fever (ASF) and Avian Influenza (AI), but also Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE), Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), Blue Tongue (BT), Schmallenberg virus (SBV) and Classical Swine Fever (CSF) require continued vigilance. A list of diseases monitored at EU level is available here.
The U.S. competent authority for the monitoring of EU animal disease outbreaks and the establishment of protection measures against infiltration of these diseases into the United States is with the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).
